I think it's a different story, just an integration on the interface, but it would be convenient to combine them together.

4. levein: Not just yet. Lookout indexes and searches everything in Outlook (e-mail, contacts, tasks, calendar, notes, and Journal entries). Google Desktop currently only works on e-mail.

Carl: I agree. For a first beta release, it's mighty impressive. If Gmail is any barometer, we can expect a steady flow of enhancements and improvements.

ubaid: I've not yet seen a direct comparison (sounds like a good blog article though). CDS is a nice utility and it currently does more than Google Desktop (especially its images and music indexing). But, as I said just above, this is a first beta release and I fully expect that Google will continue to add and refine this tool.

5. hey, i have being trying google desktop search for some dyas and i found it really impressive! i like it very much!
but i still have an unclear point in my mind: google creates a "copy", in cache; for all the pages or documents i look at..so i wanted to know if it's going to occupy a lot of space in my hard disk in few weeks only for the copies..
i tried to delete some files from my hard disk and i still can see them using the cache that google had created before..

6. Has anyone discovered a workaround to this problem? The installer requires that you have administrator privileges, which in my case (and many others I think) means logging in as administrator. But then when I log in as myself again Desktop Google won't run. I get an error that the account that installed the program needs to be the same as the one running it. The FAQ has some oblique references to this under the topic of running the program under "multiple accounts," which they say is not supported. I don't want to run it under
multiple accounts, just one, after I get it installed. Any ideas?

7. It doesn't appear to search other text files such as source code (e.g. *.cs). Does anybody know if there's way to customize what text files it will index?

8. You could take that account that you want Google Desktop Search on, turn it into an Admin account. Run Google Desktop Search and let it finish indexing to be on the safe side, the turn the account back to Limites.

9. I liked what this program could do BUT it prevented me from loading large Word files - 10 megs or greater. No problem before installing Google Desktop Search - and none after I removed it. I have a gig of RAM so memory shortage should not have been a major problem. Any one else with the same/similar experience?

Also, it would not index files with RTF extension even if they were Word files.
