French Anti-Google Sentiment Infects President's Office

Alan Riding reports in the NY Times on France's growing alarm over the Google Print project, which seeks to digitize a massive library of literature, creating something resembling the mythical "Internet library" that never came close to realization. The concern of French authorities, including, as of recently, President Chirac, is that Google's view of human knowledge will reflect an American bias. The French are notoriously proud of their language and intellectual heritage. More recently, the French have earned a reputation for provoking, accusing, and litigitating against Google. The upshot here is that France will probably raise money and resources to mount its own digitization project. I don't expect much scholarly collegialism between the two projects.
