I'm not sure why Google is being so sly about the latest Gmail feature. As of yesterday I am able to set a preference on a per-mailer basis to always display images from a particular sender. This works very much the same way it does in Outlook and is really welcome. You still can display images one message at a a time as you prefer, but it's nice to be able to have e-mail from trusted sources just open up with full formatting.
Now, if they'd just add that Move to Trash button…

5. In case you haven't already discovered this...
Gmail's "suggest a feature" page has 15-20 checkboxes for specific features. I assume these are the most frequently requested features. I'd guess that the number of votes for these is included in their prioritization discussions.
So, click on "Help", then "Contact Us", then "Suggest a feature" and vote for your favorites.

6. You really don't have to wait for Google for the 'Move to trash' button if you use Firefox. Just install the Greasemonkey extension (http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/). Then install the Gmail Smart-Delete button script (http://dunck.us/code/greasemonkey/Gmail_Smart-Delete_Button.user.js)
You have a fully functional, extremely useful 'Delete' button.

8. I deleted my other gmail account by mistake over 6 months ago and no one has the screen name yet but whenever I attempt to get that screen name back, it says it is not available. Does anyone know how long gmail takes to release back out so someone can get it back?

13. Be careful. If you tend to leave Gmail open all the time. the Greasemonkey script can get you locked out of your account. I'm not sure why, perhaps it causes a recurring refresh of the Gmail window which in turn pings the server.
All I know is I got locked out of my Gmail account - something I can't afford to have happen - and the reason Google provided was unusual and excessive account activity.
As soon as I removed the Greasemonkey script - no more problems.
BTW - I was mighty impressed at the speed with which the Gmail support team responded to my e-mail and got my account unlocked. In all it took less than an hour.

14. I had the same problem a few weekx ago. At first Isuspected the scripts, so I removed them. But it happened again!
I also used Gmail Notifier, so I the uninstalled that. All was well for a while, so I decided to reinstall Notifier. I re-downloaded it from Google, just in case anything was updated.
They didn't indicate any changes, but I reinstalled and all is well.
GreaseMonkey rolled out a new version (0.3.3) which may have played a part in the problem.
Try DL'ing the latest Gmail Smart-Delete Button script which was updated for GM 0.3.3.
It is working fine for me - No more lockdowns!

15. Foggy: Good to know. If I could ask a favor - would you post a comment a few days from now to confirm that this is still the case? I just can't afford the lockout. The script is convenient but not at the expense of losing access to me Gmail.

16. I've had my account locked too, but, I really don't think it was because of the GreaseMonkey script. My account got locked because I was accessing it from home when a logged in window was still open at work. Gmail considers that as suspicious activity. I haven't had any lockdowns since I stopped doing that. I've posted about it on my blog at -

And Marc, I don't think the refresh is caused by the script. Gmail automatically refreshes every 2 mins. So, staying logged in permanently is more likely a reason for the account to get locked than the script.
17. Thejo: Perhaps. But at the time I got locked out, the GreaseMonkey script was the only variable in my customary Gamil patterns. I have only the Tablet PC so it was not too many devices hitting the account simultaneously in my case.

18. Warning to all Gmail users: Gmail can be hacked and hijacked. It happened to me.
But it gets worse, much worse. The “Gmail security Team” responded with such overwhelming incompetence as to make the original attack mild by comparison.
As background, I am a very experienced techie, who has always practiced safe and secure online habits. I was also a fan of Google/Gmail – I understood the bounds of what they seemed to offer and I was trusting of their claim to “make money without doing evil”. Sadly, they have become that which they once despised.
A quick version of what happened is this; like many Gmail users, I was setup to have all new emails forwarded to my primary email account. One morning I noticed an email that had been forwarded to people I didn’t know – from my Gmail account! In a panic I realized that the email that was forwarded contained a stray piece of information from which some banking details could be garnered. Over the next few minutes I looked on in dismay as I started receiving emails confirming my “new” “e-gold” accounts and my attempts to purchase foreign gold!
Seeking assistance with how to stop this crime in progress, I decided to try contacting my “friends” at Gmail whose focus it is to “provide the best user experience possible”. Amazingly, this is when the true nightmare began.
Not only did the Gmail/Google staff respond in a robotic and unhelpful manner, but after confirming the attack, all of my original emails and data were completely eliminated by the “Gmail Team”. That’s right – all of the personal and business data that was entrusted to Gmail has was simply eliminated. Even worse, Gmail made no indication of where the data went, who removed it and why, and who had access to it during their “investigation”.
Please understand, I was a true Google believer. In fact I had encouraged many friends to open a Gmail account. I was even considering installing the new Google desktop search tool on the day of the attack!
Gmail’s response to all of this has been wildly unethical and dangerous. It is very disheartening, but Google seems to have become that which they once despised.
If you of any living breathing human at Gmail, who can even begin to explain this, please let me know. I really don’t think a “they have too many users to keep track of” justification can cut it. This is serious problem – that has hurt real people. At any other large corporation or institution you can always eventually find someone who takes responsibility. Should we really trust our lives to something as faceless and non-responsive as Gmail? The V.P. in charge of Gmail is Jonathan Rosenberg, so I have used his contact info in my preliminary filing with the NWIC/FBI and the IFCC.
Please contact me with any information, experiences, or suggestions. I would be happy to provide you with as much corroborating documentation as you would like. I am just a regular guy going about his business and trying to lead an honest life – I won’t be the last one to have a piece of his security and trust squashed by this emerging monolith.
