Google Print for Libraries initiative is under fire again, and again from publishers. This time, the Association of Learned and Professional Book Publishers has posted a letter asking Google to cease scanning books in libraries. Google Print for Libraries differs from its sister program, Google Print for Publishers, in that Google purportedly scans library materials without clearing copyright agreements with the book publishers. However, as noted in Google's agreement with the University of Michigan, Google is required by the agreement's language to take responsibility in this regard. Without knowing the deatils of every agreement, one can guess that there is probably some misunderstanding on both sides. Perhaps Google fully intends to scan its way through libraries with the utmost sensitivity to copyrights. And perhaps Google launched its library program with too much haste and disregard for the needs of publishers. What's needed here is a loud, comprehensive statement from Google about how the Google Print for Libraries program will operate.
