It's going on six hours that I can't connect to Google via its domain name. I can connect via the IP address, but
that's it. Instead, I was earlier being redirected to another search engine called SOGO (I took the screenshot to the
right at about 9:15 a.m. Eastern time). Now, I'm simply timing out when trying to connect to the domain name
google.com.
When trying to connect to www.google.com/ig, which I use as my home page, I was receiving the following error
message:
Not Found
The requested URL /ig was not found on this server.
Apache/2.0.50 (FreeBSD) PHP/4.3.8 Server at www.google.com Port 80
I no longer receive that error message. I simply time out. After posting my belief on Digg.com that
Google was down and being told by 20 people that I was nuts, I can only assume this is a local DNS issue. The mystery
now is why I'm not being redirected to the SOGO search engine anymore.
The timing couldn't be worse: I'm finishing a book about Google right now that's due within the next week. Hopefully,
the IP address will continue to work for me until the DNS issue(s) is resolved.
Local DNS issue causing Google problem?

(Page 1)2. I pinged gmail.com and mail.google.com and got two different IPs. Both take you to Google's homepage, not Gmail.
Were you able to IP your way through to Gmail though?

4. Sure sounds like a local/DNS issue, but, as with any connectivity issue, if the end points aren't known, there's not much that can be done. I would suggest posting your local (routable) IP in case any Googlers catch wind of this and want to troubleshoot. With a service as distributed as Google's, the address space you come from can have significant ramifications on how your query is served.

5. Everything seems to work again. I did try using the Google toolbar and that didn't make any difference. The only thing that worked over about a seven- or eight-hour period today was typing in the IP address.

7. Hey people,
I've been following these comments all day. Is anyone able to log into GMAIL now?
I am in Michigan, ISP is Comcast (which could be a problem of its own), and it's 8:20PM EST right now...

8. Theres a file in windows, that stores local dns's where you can assign any ip you want to any domain, its like a virtual domain.
So what someone did was wrote a code that added an entry "www.google.com" and set it to their ip, which was really that sogo site you got.
When you typed in "www.google.com" it sent you to that ip, instead of googles, but in your url bar it will still show "www.google.com".
Example:
The file is located here... C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc
The file name you have to edit is called "hosts"
Go there and add "any ip address" google.com
Now when you type in google.com it will take you to my home page.
To fix the problem, delete any lines in that folder having to do with "www.google.com".
Feel free to email with any further questions.

1. This looks similar to an earlier report at engadget.
