Some buzz around 30gigs.com, an invitation-only (for now) Webmail service offering 30 gigs of storage; obviously a response to Google's shake-up of e-mail storage expectations. The site is unavailable on my machine right now, perhaps due to the Slashdot effect. But the idea that fixed capacity, even big capacity, can beat Google is faulty. The beauty of Gmail's continually escalating storage is the feeling of unlimitlesness that it gives. I occasionally check my counter, and notice that the receding walls keep my account about 10 percent filled. The assumption this cultivates is that Gmail will never run out of room during normal e-mail use; Google will keep pace with my needs. A big fixed repository sound more like a storage and file-sharing solution than an e-mail solution, though the boundaries are getting pretty smeared.
30GB E-Mail Doesn't Really Beat Gmail

(Page 1)2. In a word it's rubbish. I've been using it for a week now and have given up. It's incredibly slow and has no reasons for me to abandon GMail. I use my GMail account a file storage area and have only just hit 1/2 GB. Who really needs 30GB?
Don't sweat for an invite it's not worth it. When the revised Yahoo! email goes out you'll have more of a choice but quick frankly, 30GB doesn't warrant a second look, unless it's improved dramatically.
