Much to my surprise today, during my near-daily use of Google Maps, I was
jarred by a page design reversal that throws the map onto the right side of the page, and the search results on the
left. This was so disconcerting to me that I instinctively grabbed the monitor and dragged it across my desk to the
left, trying to get the map into its propert field of view. The page feels totally lopsided to me this way.
Even more upsetting is the removal of the Local and Directions links above the search box. Perhaps Google wants to
separate its traffic more accurately, and having those two features accessible on a single page made measurements
difficult. But the integration of the three engines was sweet, and one of the advantages that made Google Maps/Local
the leader of its field. Directions are still available from the results bubble on a map (To Here and From Here).
Maps is now automatically personalized; a notice on the left-hand sidebar announces "Starting at Yourcity,
SC." Every search centers by default around your IP-derived location. That's convenient. But I still don't
understand why Google had to reverse the page layout. By the end of the day I'll need a chirpractic adjustment.

(Page 1)2. Yes I noticed that too, its just a cookie. I love that I don't have to type my address to get directions now. I agree that on the front page there is way too much whitespace on the left side. Although on the directions page I have to admit the new UI fits nicely with the text on the left nav.
3. I personally think the new layout is more intuitive. It does take time to get used to it, but this is probably how they should have had it from the get-go.

4. When I frist saw the strange, it felt off. But after using it for a while, it has already grown on me. The new UI seems more intuitive. And local and maps are now merged into one, no need to go back and forth.

5. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the need for an option of making the maps larger?
Also when is google going to update these (satellite) maps? There huge sections of the country that are nothing but big green blobs that are useless. I've heard numerous times how google is "now" providing high res maps of other parts of the world while there are huge areas of the US that have maps not worth looking at.
6. To make the map larger, just make your browser larger.

1. > Every search centers by default around your IP-derived location.
Wrong. It's a cookie. (My IP address is "based" nowhere near my location) Every time you search on a city, you have the option of setting that as your default location.
The IP-derived address would never work - just think of the number of AOL subscribers who would all look like they're coming from Virginia.
