When Google recently (and vaguely) partnered with Sun Microsystems, it was widely speculated that Google would acquire, or distribute, or massage, or somehow stick its hands into OPenOffice, the free productivity suite that provides a viable alternative to Microsoft Office components. Google and Sun downplayed all such speculations. Now, though, according to CNET reporting, Google plans to hire personnel specifically to develop OpenOffice. Would Google spend human resources to needle Microsoft? I hope so.
Google Plans OpenOffice Development

(Page 1)2. I really hope Google do get involved in pushing OpenOffice. It's a great set of products that really is a decent alternative to MS Office. Unfortunately not enough people know about it, but with Google's involvement this will change.

3. The OpenOffice.org SDK is an add-on for the OpenOffice.org office suite. It provides the necessary tools and documentation for programming the OpenOffice.org APIs and creating own extensions (UNO components) for OpenOffice.org.
The highlight of the SDK is the 900-page Developer's Guide. This comprehensive guide provides a detailed description of the OpenOffice.org API concepts, the OpenOffice.org UNO component model and how to use the API in the context of the different application areas. At the close of each chapter, there is at least one example that demonstrates how to use a specific API.

4. Google has great reasons to put ressources into an Office development:
1) Reduce the amount of users of MS Office - since this is where MS will try and implement their search engine to catch up on Google
2) Hurt MS's profit (they get 41% from Office) to reduce the financial capabilities to catch up
This battle is going down within the next 2-4 years, after which Google will stand as winner, and have a higher market value than Microsoft currently worth 2½ times as much - but fast declining. Watching paint dry is more fun than watching Microsoft's share price.
