The Indian government was worried
about sensitive areas being available through Google Earth searches, so Google The government was up in arms with particular locations in high resolution, specifically military installations, armed force headquarters, sensitive nuclear installations, and Rashtrapati Bhavan.
UPDATE: In further research on this sensitive material, it was reported that images of sensitive Indian locations were being looked into by the Indian defense, science, and technology ministries as an order by the Prime Minister's office. With this instruction, they will also be looking at measures to proceed masking the area from satellite maps in a method that would pose no danger to the country. The methods for masking them have not been decided upon. As in the past, Google has provided maps that have had areas such as the White House blocked out with lower resolution versions, and undetailed rooflines.
Google India's public relations agency has said that Google has taken the Indian Government's concerns very seriously, and is willing to cooperate with them on this matter.
The White House, Pentagon, and other military institutions were at one time masked from Google maps.

Thank you to Felix Salmon, Frank Taylor, and Stefan Geens for pointing out that there might be flaws in the India Times article previously referenced.

1. Your story is inaccurate, you should check your sources. Google has NOT removed anything. First of all, there has not been a data update since Feb. 13th, and it did not have anything to do with India. Secondly, all the satellite data provided by Google Earth is purchased from world-wide providers. India would have to get those companies to remove the data, not Google.
