The Google Summer of Code is a program that helps student developers create open source programs. Google is planning on
identifying and funding several hundred projects over three months, with the help of open source, free software and
technology companies mentoring and inspiring students.
The application process opens officially on May 1
2006, and Google hopes to fund over 400 participants this year. Only students enrolled in an accredited institution to
get the chance at the funding for the Summer of Code. All rules and guidelines are available on the Google Code website.
Participating mentoring organizations for this
years Summer of Code include Apache, GNOME, Google, Jabber, Python, The GNU Project, and the Wikimedia Foundation.
