Bitoogle, a Bit Torrent file search engine

BitoogleJust when Google may finally decide to enable searching of audio and video content we came across Bitoogle—a search engine just for Torrents. I bet they will very soon get a cease-and-desist letter from Google legal department. Or maybe not, Booble is still up.

But it's a neat idea anyway. I'd love to hear some feedback about how good the search results are.

A9 is live!

A9Amazon logo

John Battelle breaks the story about A9, the newly-launched search-engine from Amazon. Amazingly the giant e-commerce company chose a blogger to spread the news out from the blogosphere to the world (and to the traditional media). Batelle had an exclusive sneak-preview of the service one month ago. His words:

One could argue that A9 is a pure commerce play, not a search portal. After all, that's what the folks at Amazon insisted when they founded the company and located it in the heart of Google/YahooLand (ie, Palo Alto). But that argument is disingenuous. First off, take a look at the A9 interface. Where's the commerce? (Answer, it's there, but it's hidden, more on that later when I post on the service itself). And second, I'd argue that you can't really be in the commerce business without having at least a strategy for owning search. The reverse also hold true. It's two ends toward the middle, and by the way, that middle ground is getting damn crowded - AOL, Yahoo, MSN, eBay, IAC, Amazon, Google…

PS: There's also  a generic version of A9 that doesn't track users via cookies or use their data.

[UPDATE: Can't Google launch this tool to end all these rumors???. The first shot is reportedly fake. According to Kevin Fox]

Google's hiring off-shoreplanet team

Google Moon OfficeSince I have already fallen for Jason's April Fool's joke I won't believe that Google is really hiring for their Moon offices (Google Copernicus Hosting Environment and Experiment in Search Engineering  — G.C.H.E.E.S.E.).

Google is interviewing candidates for engineering positions at our lunar hosting and research center, opening late in the spring of 2007. This unique opportunity is available only to highly-qualified individuals who are willing to relocate for an extended period of time, are in top physical condition and are capable of surviving with limited access to such modern conveniences as soy low-fat lattes, The Sopranos and a steady supply of oxygen.

The Google Copernicus Hosting Environment and Experiment in Search Engineering (G.C.H.E.E.S.E.) is a fully integrated research, development and technology facility at which Google will be conducting experiments in entropized information filtering, high-density high-delivery hosting (HiDeHiDeHo) and de-oxygenated cubicle dwelling. This center will provide a unique platform from which Google will leapfrog current terrestrial-based technologies and bring information access to new heights of utility.
